Logano Eliminated From championship After Costly Pit Stop Errors At Martinsville

Joey Logano’s title hopes are dead after a rough Sunday at Martinsville. The Team Penske star finished 18th and lost his chance to win the 2026 Cup Series championship. Two bad pit stops killed his race when he needed them most. First, he had to stop again under green to fix a loose wheel. Then, his crew struggled to pull a wrench from the rear window while dragging a member out of the box. Logano said the team tried to win but handed the race back to others.

“We kind of had them where we wanted them,” said Logano after the race, according to Yahoo Sports. Frustration is the result since we returned it immediately when they attempted to hand it over. The driver admitted the team lost together on Sunday. He noted that the opportunity was there in the last few weeks but they missed the shot. Now he looks at the comeback from the regular season with pride despite the loss.

The Cost of a Bad Stop

Racing often comes down to seconds in the pits. Logano earned three victories since July and led all Ford drivers in the standings. He climbed to fifth place before this race. But one bad day at a short track erased all that hard work. The numbers show he was within 40 points of the runner-up spot. Finishing second in the standings remains a realistic possibility for the No. 22 team. It is a tough lesson for a driver who won titles in 2018, 2022, and 2024. Even a great season can end on a single mistake.

Following his recent wins, Logano stated that “there are plenty of positives.” He knows the car speed was there but the execution failed on Sunday. The team lost the race because of their own errors. This is not about bad luck or rival drivers. It is about doing the simple things right when the pressure is highest. A wrench left in a window or a loose wheel costs championships.

What the Numbers Say for the Finale

William Byron won the race at Martinsville for Hendrick Motorsports. He led 362 of 500 laps to take the checkered flag. Chase Elliott finished second to make it a 1-2 sweep for the team. Kyle Larson finished ninth to keep his lead over Denny Hamlin. Larson now holds a 73-point lead with two races left. Hamlin needs a miracle to catch him. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver must outscore Larson by 51 points just to stay in the hunt.

Hamlin knows the odds are against him. “It would probably come down to how many cars you think is going to be on the lead lap at Homestead?” According to Yahoo Sports, Hamlin said this in Martinsville. He needs to gain 25-30 points to feel any hope. Even that is probably a stretch. Larson has a commanding advantage and Hamlin needs almost everything to go right. The next race is at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the final title fight.

Larson admitted he did not expect to be in this spot before the Chase started. He felt his car lacked speed nine weeks ago. Now he credits his team for making fewer mistakes. “The fastest car doesn’t always win these races,” Larson said, according to Yahoo Sports. Usually, the team that commits the fewest errors is the best one. That consistency is what separates a champion from a also-ran. Logano had the speed but not the clean pit stops on Sunday.
