Carson Hocevar will not be behind the wheel for the final race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season after Spire Motorsports announced Tuesday that it was suspending its driver following a controversial afternoon at Martinsville Speedway.
The decision comes after Hocevar became involved in multiple incidents during Sunday’s race, including a series of collisions with Austin Cindric that ultimately ended Cindric’s day. Hocevar was accused of intentionally brake checking the No. 2 Ford multiple times, causing significant damage and leaving Cindric with a 36th place finish.
Hocevar denied intentionally causing the incident, but Spire Motorsports decided his actions crossed a line.
Spire Sends a Message
Team co-owner Jeff Dickerson explained that the organization expects professionalism from everyone representing Spire Motorsports. He also made it clear that the decision was about more than points or money.
The team announced that Justin Haley will replace Hocevar in the No. 77 Chevrolet for Sunday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The suspension is a significant development for Hocevar, who has developed a reputation as one of NASCAR’s most aggressive young drivers. He earned his first Cup Series victory earlier this season at Talladega and entered the final race weekend sitting 12th in the championship standings.
Hocevar Responds
Hocevar addressed the situation publicly, calling it an embarrassing day and accepting responsibility for letting down his team, sponsors and fans. He acknowledged that his actions crossed the line and said he looks forward to returning in 2027 as a better driver and teammate.
While NASCAR had not announced an additional penalty or fine as of Tuesday, Spire’s decision sends a clear message.
Hocevar has plenty of talent and a bright future, but this situation could become an important turning point in his career. How he responds when he returns next season will be something NASCAR fans closely watch.
