Kimi Antonelli Could Make Formula 1 History This Weekend in Mexico City

Kimi Antonelli is just one race away from potentially making Formula 1 history, and this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix could become the defining moment of his young career.

The Mercedes superstar enters the 19th round of the 2026 season with an opportunity to secure his first world championship. At just 20 years old, Antonelli is on the verge of becoming the youngest Formula 1 champion ever, potentially rewriting the record books in a season that has exceeded expectations.

And after what happened in Austin, the anticipation could not be higher.

Antonelli Is Closing In on History

Antonelli appeared ready to celebrate his championship at the United States Grand Prix after delivering a commanding victory from pole position. However, Lewis Hamilton’s fourth-place finish and George Russell’s eighth-place result kept the title fight alive for at least another week.

Despite missing that first opportunity, Antonelli strengthened his position considerably.

The Italian now leads Russell by 123 points and Hamilton by 124 points with five races remaining. He needs only a ninth-place finish or better in Mexico City to guarantee the championship, regardless of where his closest challengers finish.

That puts the pressure squarely on his rivals.

If Antonelli gets the job done, he will become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record. He would also end Italy’s 73-year wait for a drivers’ championship, with Alberto Ascari last accomplishing the feat in 1953.

Can Anybody Stop Mercedes’ Rising Star?

Although Antonelli enters the weekend in an incredible position, the job is not finished.

Russell and Hamilton still have a mathematical chance to keep the championship alive, but both need a huge result while hoping Antonelli encounters trouble.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen remains a major threat for the race victory. The Red Bull driver has been finding his form recently, making him one of the drivers to watch as the field heads to Mexico.

The high altitude at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez also presents a unique challenge, testing engine performance, cooling and aerodynamic efficiency.

A Weekend Formula 1 Fans Cannot Miss

Antonelli has already won nine races this season, establishing himself as one of the sport’s biggest stars.

Now, he has a chance to turn an outstanding campaign into a historic championship.

Could Kimi Antonelli officially become Formula 1’s youngest world champion this Sunday? All eyes will be on Mexico City as the Mercedes driver looks to finish the job.
