The NASCAR playoffs have officially turned into a nightmare for several drivers, and the latest championship eliminations have left some of the sport’s biggest names with absolutely no chance of lifting the trophy this season.
Following a wild weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, nine Cup Series drivers, five Truck Series drivers and four O’Reilly Series drivers have been mathematically eliminated from championship contention.
That’s 18 drivers across NASCAR’s three national series who can no longer win a championship this season, regardless of what happens in the remaining races.
And some of the names on the list are bound to surprise fans.
NINE CUP SERIES DRIVERS ELIMINATED
The Cup Series suffered the biggest wave of eliminations after Kyle Larson’s dramatic Talladega victory completely changed the championship picture.
William Byron, Chase Elliott, Ty Gibbs, Austin Cindric, Carson Hocevar, Bubba Wallace, Daniel Suarez, Ryan Preece and Chris Buescher have all officially been eliminated from championship contention.
The biggest shock might be seeing both Byron and Elliott out of the championship fight. Hendrick Motorsports entered the postseason with three legitimate title contenders, but Larson is now the organization’s only driver still mathematically eligible to win the championship.
Byron finished second to Larson at Talladega, but even that impressive result wasn’t enough to keep his championship hopes alive.
Elliott also finds himself eliminated after a difficult postseason, while Gibbs and Cindric are among the other notable names who will be watching the final two races without a chance to win the title.
For Hocevar, Wallace, Suarez, Preece and Buescher, the focus now shifts toward finishing the season strong and building momentum for next year.
Larson, meanwhile, has taken control of the championship battle and could clinch his third Cup Series title at Martinsville.
FIVE TRUCK SERIES DRIVERS HAVE NO CHANCE LEFT
The Truck Series has also seen its championship field shrink considerably.
Giovanni Ruggiero, Daniel Hemric, Ben Rhodes, Tyler Ankrum and Grant Enfinger have all been mathematically eliminated from championship contention.
Rhodes is a particularly notable name on the list. The veteran has won multiple Truck Series championships, but he will not be adding another one to his collection this season.
Enfinger also entered the postseason with valuable experience, making his elimination another major development in the Truck Series championship battle.
Meanwhile, Ruggiero, Hemric and Ankrum will have to turn their attention toward finishing the season on a high note.
With the championship fight narrowing, every remaining race becomes even more important for the drivers still alive.
FOUR MORE DRIVERS ELIMINATED IN THE O’REILLY SERIES
The O’Reilly Series has also lost four championship contenders.
Austin Hill, Brandon Jones, Parker Retzlaff and Rajah Caruth have all been mathematically eliminated from title contention.
Hill’s elimination is particularly eye-catching given his experience and success in the series. He is one of the most recognizable names in the O’Reilly Series, but he will not have an opportunity to compete for this year’s championship.
Jones, Retzlaff and Caruth are also out of the running, leaving the remaining contenders to battle it out for the title.
With the postseason entering its final stretch, the pressure is only going to increase for those still mathematically alive.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP PRESSURE IS RISING
Across all three national series, 18 drivers have now seen their championship dreams come to an end.
Talladega proved to be a major turning point, especially in the Cup Series, where Larson’s victory created a massive points advantage and eliminated more than half of the remaining title contenders.
Now, the attention shifts to Martinsville and the final races of the season.
Some drivers will be fighting to secure a championship, while others will be looking to finish the year with something positive after their title hopes disappeared.
