Josh Pierson is taking the next major step in his racing career after signing a multiyear agreement with AJ Foyt Racing to compete in the NTT IndyCar Series beginning in 2027. The 20-year-old American driver will make his series debut behind the wheel of the No. 4 Chevrolet as he prepares to compete against some of the best open-wheel drivers in the world.

The announcement marks a major milestone for Pierson, who has spent years working his way through different levels of motorsports. His promotion gives him an opportunity to showcase his talent on IndyCar’s biggest stage.

Pierson Joins AJ Foyt Racing

Pierson will join Dennis Hauger in AJ Foyt Racing’s two car lineup for the 2027 season. Hauger, the 2026 IndyCar Rookie of the Year, will drive the No. 14 Chevrolet, while Pierson’s sponsorship will be announced at a later date.

The move also comes during an important year for the organization. AJ Foyt Racing will celebrate the 50th anniversary of team founder A.J. Foyt’s fourth Indianapolis 500 victory in 1977.

Team president Larry Foyt expressed confidence in Pierson, highlighting his maturity, work ethic and extensive experience for a driver his age.

Pierson has also completed multiple tests with the team, including running its Chevrolet-powered car on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

An Impressive Racing Background

Although Pierson is entering IndyCar for the first time, he brings experience from several different racing disciplines. At just 16 years old, he became the youngest driver to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

He has also earned victories and podium finishes in international sports car competition, including the FIA World Endurance Championship, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA.

Pierson most recently competed in INDY NXT, IndyCar’s developmental series. He finished 11th in the 2026 standings but ended the season strongly, earning two poles and winning at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca after leading every lap.

That performance helped demonstrate his potential to move into the top series.

A New Challenge in 2027

Pierson has described racing in IndyCar as a lifelong dream, and his new opportunity gives him a chance to turn that ambition into reality.

The 2027 season is scheduled to begin March 7 at St. Petersburg. Pierson will face a steep learning curve, but his diverse background could help him adjust to the demands of IndyCar racing.

For AJ Foyt Racing, the signing represents an investment in a young driver with significant experience and room to develop. For Pierson, it is the beginning of the biggest chapter of his career.
