Kyle Larson won a chaotic Enjoy Illinois 300 at Gateway on Sunday.
The victory moved Larson to second in the championship standings.
It also ended a 51-race winless streak.
Larson beat teammate Alex Bowman in overtime by 0.333 seconds.
That Hendrick Motorsports 1-2 finish was only part of the story.
Gateway delivered chaos from beginning to end.
Nobody Could Escape the Chaos
The race produced 18 cautions.
Those cautions consumed 87 laps.
The field also needed two overtime attempts to settle the winner.
Brake problems created major issues throughout the afternoon.
Several Chase contenders also found trouble at the worst possible time.
Bubba Wallace finished 14th.
Christopher Bell finished 19th.
Ryan Blaney finished 35th after brake trouble.
Chase Elliott finished 31st.
That made Larson’s clean execution even more important.
Larson Seized Every Opportunity
Larson started second alongside pole winner Joey Logano.
Logano dominated the opening stage.
Larson responded by winning the second stage.
From there, he stayed near the front through repeated restarts.
He ultimately led 80 laps.
Nobody could shake the No. 5 Chevrolet.
Then came the overtime chaos.
Larson held off Bowman and Logano to claim his first win since 2024.
The Championship Picture Changed
Larson’s victory was worth far more than a trophy.
He jumped five positions in the Chase standings.
Only Denny Hamlin now sits ahead of him.
Christopher Bell fell to third.
The playoff field also tightened considerably behind them.
That makes Larson’s timing almost perfect.
He spent months searching for a breakthrough.
Now he has one with the championship on the line.
Gateway was chaotic.
Larson was not.
And that could make him one of the biggest threats remaining in the Chase.
