Right Rear Tire Failure Sends No. 11 Team Into Trouble Late in the Race
Denny Hamlin suffered a major setback Sunday at Phoenix Raceway after a right-rear tire failure derailed his strong run in the NASCAR Cup Series Freeway Insurance 500. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver had been running inside the top five before the incident, but the tire problem sent his No. 11 Toyota to pit road and put his championship hopes in serious jeopardy.
With fewer than 100 laps remaining, Hamlin appeared to be in position for a valuable finish as he continued chasing points leader Kyle Larson. Instead, the tire failure forced him to make an unscheduled stop and lose a lap to the leaders.
Pit Road Mistake Makes Matters Worse
Hamlin’s difficult afternoon did not end with the tire issue. After falling a lap down, the veteran driver had an opportunity to regain track position when a caution came out on Lap 223.
Hamlin was positioned to receive the free pass, which would have allowed him to return to the lead lap. However, he was caught speeding on pit entry while bringing his damaged No. 11 car to pit road. The penalty made him ineligible for the free pass.
Hamlin restarted on Lap 230 one lap down in 31st place, leaving him with a difficult challenge to recover the lost ground.
Championship Battle Takes a Hit
The timing could hardly be worse for Hamlin. He entered Phoenix second in the Chase standings, 49 points behind Larson, and needed a strong result to close the gap as the championship battle moved deeper into the season.
Hamlin had collected valuable stage points earlier in the race, but the tire failure and pit-road penalty threatened to erase much of that progress.
With the race continuing, Hamlin needed another caution and a strong late run to salvage his afternoon. His difficult position also gave Larson’s other championship rivals an opportunity to gain ground.
For Hamlin and the No. 11 team, Phoenix turned into a frustrating test of resilience. What began as a promising run quickly became a battle to limit the damage in a championship fight where every point matters.
