The summer break has arrived, but don’t mistake it for a pause in the drama.
If anything, MotoGP’s second half is shaping up to be one of the most compelling championship battles in recent memory. Just 24 points separate the top five riders in the standings, leaving the title race wide open with several Grand Prix weekends still to come.
Leading the way is defending champion Jorge Martin, but his advantage is anything but comfortable. Martin sits atop the standings with 208 points, followed by Trackhouse Aprilia’s Ai Ogura at 194. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez used a dominant weekend at the German Grand Prix to climb to third with 190 points, while Marco Bezzecchi (186) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (184) remain firmly in contention.
The biggest storyline entering the stretch run may be Marquez.
Just a few races ago, the Ducati star appeared out of the championship picture after overcoming another injury setback. Since then, he’s slashed a triple-digit deficit and has suddenly reinserted himself into the title conversation thanks to a string of dominant performances, including a perfect 37-point weekend at Sachsenring.
Then there’s Ogura.
The sophomore has emerged as one of MotoGP’s biggest surprises, consistently putting his Aprilia near the front while proving he belongs in the championship conversation. His runner-up finish in Germany moved him within 14 points of Martin, giving Aprilia two riders inside the top four entering the second half of the season.
Beyond the title fight, the rider market remains another major storyline.
Fabio Quartararo has already announced he’ll leave Yamaha for Honda beginning in 2027, while manufacturers continue preparing for MotoGP’s sweeping technical regulation changes that arrive next season with the new 850cc era. Teams are balancing a championship chase with planning for the sport’s next chapter.
The championship resumes at Silverstone after the summer break, where every point becomes increasingly valuable. One mistake could erase a title lead. One dominant weekend could completely reshape the standings.
That’s what makes the second half of 2026 so intriguing.
