World Wide Technology Raceway did something this weekend that no other track had managed all season: it sent two of NASCAR’s defending national series champions back to Victory Lane.
Jesse Love did it Saturday night. Kyle Larson followed less than 24 hours later.
Two defending champions. Two winless streaks dating back to 2025. And somehow, both ended at Gateway during the second race of their respective Chases.
For Love, the zero in the win column never told the entire story. The defending O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion entered the Chase with seven top-five finishes, 13 top 10s and 383 laps led — already more than the 297 he led during his entire 2025 championship season.
The opportunities had been there. At Nashville, Love led 87 laps from the pole before a loose wheel derailed one of his best chances.
Gateway finally gave him the result to match the speed.
Love started second, won Stage 2 and led 70 laps before passing Carson Kvapil with 16 remaining. His first win of 2026 moved him to fourth in the Chase standings, 16 points behind Sheldon Creed.
Then Larson completed the coincidence.
The defending Cup champion entered Sunday carrying a 51-race winless streak dating back to Kansas in May 2025. But one week earlier at Darlington, Larson led a race-high 99 laps before a late strategy gamble left him fifth.
At Gateway, he finally converted, surviving a chaotic finish and overtime restart to earn his 33rd career Cup victory and move to second in the Chase standings.
Neither driver needed Gateway to establish himself as a championship contender. Their performance had already done that.
But within 24 hours at the same track, two reigning champions finally had wins to prove it.
