If there was ever a NASCAR race built for the phrase “What in the world is happening?” Sunday at World Wide Technology Raceway was it.
Gateway’s signature phrase became almost too fitting as the Cup Series race produced a track-record 18 cautions, two red flags, multiple brake failures, multi-car wrecks and a double-overtime finish.
But at Gateway, chaos rarely comes out of nowhere.
The 1.25-mile track forces drivers to navigate two very different sets of corners, heavy braking zones and long straightaways. Track position matters, passing opportunities can be limited and restarts leave little room for error.
Sunday pushed all of it to the extreme.
Seven Chase contenders were caught in one Stage 3 restart wreck. Brake failures derailed several more drivers, and late crashes continued to reshape the field as simply surviving became part of the challenge.
Then Kyle Larson emerged from it all.
Larson used four fresh tires to chase down Joey Logano late and survived the final restarts to snap a 51-race Cup Series winless streak. More importantly for the Chase, the victory moved Larson to second in the standings, just nine points behind Denny Hamlin heading to Bristol.
Gateway has always been a track that asks drivers to brake hard, manage track position and capitalize when opportunities appear.
Sunday just turned every one of those challenges up at once.
