Treyten Lapcevich didn’t just show up for his first race with JR Motorsports; he took the checkered flag. Making his debut in the No. 8 car, Lapcevich beat out the reigning CARS Tour champion during the series finale at South Boston Speedway. It was a massive statement from a driver looking to climb the NASCAR ladder.

The race featured a heavy battle between teammates. Caden Kvapil held the lead for much of the first half of the event, according to Short Track Scene. However, Lapce and Kvapil engaged in a intense ten-lap fight that saw the newcomer come out on top. Lapcevich used a bold move, including a bit of a shove into Turn 1, to complete the pass.

Kvapil noted the difficulty of the late-race struggle. He said that after a long red flag period caused by a competition caution, his car became very tight. According to Short Track Scene, Kvapil said, “I knew he was better, but just couldn’t hold him off.”

A New Era for the No. 8 Car

This win is more than just a single trophy. Dale Earnhardt Jr. intends to run the No. 8 car a few times next season, but he plans to keep the focus on owner’s points. The team needs drivers who can perform at a high level, and Lapcevich just proved he is that person. He recently left Chad Bryant Racing and is hungry for a national touring spot.

Lapcevich brings a heavy resume to this new opportunity. Two CARS Tour victories are already on his record, alongside his 2023 NASCAR Pinty’s Series championship win. He also has a victory at the South Carolina 400 and finished as the runner-up in the CARS Tour standings this year. Seeing a driver with this much talent move into a JR Motorsports seat is a huge deal for the sport’s future.

The Intensity of the South Boston Duel

The racing at South Boston was pure grit. Lapcevich didn’t play it safe; he went for the win with everything he had. He described the battle as special and expressed his gratitude to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the team. He even admitted that he had to use a little bit of a nudge to get past Kvapil.

Kvapil took the loss with a lot of class, which is exactly what we want to see in our athletes. He called Lapcevich an “awesome kid” and said he had fun working with him. Even though Kvapil finished second, he stayed positive about the night and his teammate’s performance. It was a professional duel that reminded us why we love short track racing.

Lapcevich was humble about his victory, even when asked about the big opportunity. When asked about the win, he simply said, “Winning definitely doesn’t hurt.” He remains focused on the work ahead. The talent on display suggests that the No. 8 car is in very capable hands for the coming season.
