After 26 races, NASCAR’s Cup Series championship fight officially begins with 500 miles at one of the most unforgiving tracks on the schedule.
There are certainly easier places NASCAR could have chosen to start a championship fight, but the 2026 Chase opens with the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, where managing tires can matter just as much as outright speed and running inches too close to the wall can change an afternoon.
Darlington’s 1.366-mile egg-shaped layout is part of the problem. Turns 1 and 2 are wider and more sweeping, while Turns 3 and 4 are tighter, leaving teams to find a setup that works around two very different ends of the track.
The preferred line also puts drivers remarkably close to the outside wall. Sometimes a little too close. The resulting scrape along the right side of the car has been happening for so long it has its own name: the “Darlington Stripe.”
But avoiding the wall is only part of surviving Darlington.
Its abrasive surface wears tires quickly enough that the car a driver has at the beginning of a run can feel considerably different several laps later. During the Cup Series race weekend in March, lap times dropped by approximately 1.5 seconds over a 10-lap run.
That race offered a pretty good preview of what the Chase field is walking into. Tyler Reddick dealt with electrical issues and had to restart from the rear before recovering to win. Kyle Larson was running 11th with 10 laps remaining, hit the Turn 1 wall and finished 32nd.
Normally, a result like that becomes one bad Sunday in a 36-race season. Beginning this weekend, those points become much harder to get back.
Under NASCAR’s new Chase format, the standings reset before Darlington and then run straight through the final 10 races. There are no elimination rounds and, more importantly for anyone who struggles Sunday, no additional resets.
One race at Darlington won’t decide the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship. But when every point earned Sunday follows a driver through the next nine races, the Lady in Black is a particularly unforgiving place to start chasing one.
