Riley Herbst has officially found his next home in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Legacy Motor Club announced Thursday that Herbst will join the organization for the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season, driving the team’s new No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE in a multi-year deal. Herbst will also bring longtime sponsor Monster Energy with him.
The move gives Herbst an opportunity to continue his Cup Series career after two seasons with 23XI Racing. 23XI announced earlier this year that Corey Heim would replace Herbst in the No. 35 Toyota for the 2027 season, leaving Herbst searching for another opportunity.
Legacy’s new No. 84 entry will become the organization’s third full-time Cup Series car next season. The team secured an additional charter from Rick Ware Racing, allowing Legacy to expand its Cup operation.
For Herbst, the move also keeps him with Toyota, a manufacturer he has spent much of his career racing with. His NASCAR journey has included success in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series before making the jump to the Cup Series full time.
Herbst made his Cup debut in the 2023 Daytona 500, finishing an impressive 10th. He eventually became a full-time Cup driver in 2025 with 23XI Racing. Through his Cup career, Herbst has shown flashes of speed while continuing to develop at NASCAR’s highest level.
The relationship between Herbst and Legacy co-owner Jimmie Johnson is another interesting part of the move. Johnson has known the Herbst family for years and believes Herbst has the work ethic and determination needed to succeed.
“I’m excited to join LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and drive the No. 84,” Herbst said. “This new chapter is another opportunity to learn and grow in the NASCAR Cup Series.”
The move comes as Legacy undergoes significant changes heading into 2027. John Hunter Nemechek will not return to the team, while the organization prepares to add its third full-time entry.
For Herbst, 2027 represents a fresh start and another chance to prove he belongs in the Cup Series. With Toyota backing, Monster Energy continuing its partnership and a growing Legacy Motor Club organization around him, Herbst will look to make the No. 84 a competitive presence next season.
