Six Months After His First Cup Win, Carson Hocevar Heads Back to Talladega

Carson Hocevar is heading back to the track where he earned his first NASCAR Cup Series victory, and this time, he’ll arrive as a former Talladega winner.

In April, Hocevar held off Chris Buescher by just 0.114 seconds to claim his first Cup victory at Talladega Superspeedway. Now, six months later, the question is whether he can do it again.

Hocevar has never been shy about making aggressive moves, and superspeedway racing has given him plenty of opportunities to put that driving style to work. His Talladega victory wasn’t his only strong result on a drafting track this season. He also finished fourth at Atlanta in February and third when the series returned in July. And his recent Talladega record is even more encouraging.

Across his last three starts at the 2.66-mile superspeedway, Hocevar has finished sixth, sixth and first. But returning to Talladega as a previous winner doesn’t guarantee anything, especially in a race where one poorly timed push or multicar crash can change everything.

This weekend also brings another challenge. NASCAR is introducing a smaller rear spoiler as part of its continued effort to improve superspeedway racing, potentially changing how drivers build momentum and make passes.

For Hocevar, it’s another opportunity to show what he can do in the draft.

His first Talladega victory proved he could win at NASCAR’s highest level. A second would make an even bigger statement. And with another unpredictable Talladega race approaching, there’s plenty of reason to keep an eye on the No. 77.
