Shane Van Gisbergen Has Changed NASCAR, But The Sport Still Needs To Prove He Can Win Anywhere

Popular

Shane van Gisbergen has already proved that his road-course talent translates to NASCAR. The next question is how quickly he can become a threat everywhere.

The Trackhouse Racing driver has changed expectations for international talent entering American stock-car racing. His road-course ability is exceptional, and his presence has added another compelling storyline to the Cup Series.

But NASCAR is not a road-course championship.

The Oval Question Still Matters

Martinsville demands a different skill set. Drivers need patience in traffic, strong braking, tire management and the ability to handle repeated contact without losing their rhythm.

It is not enough to be spectacular on a circuit with right turns.

SVG’s supporters can reasonably argue that his overall development has been impressive. His critics can also point out that success across the full schedule is the standard for a Cup Series contender.

Both things can be true.

What Would Make SVG A True Championship Threat?

The next step is consistency across every type of track. Winning on road courses establishes credibility, but competing for a championship requires collecting strong results on ovals, short tracks and superspeedways, too.

That is a difficult transition, even for talented drivers.

Van Gisbergen has the opportunity to silence more doubters as he gains experience. But the sport should not crown him an all-around master before he proves it over a full championship campaign.

The potential is obvious. The challenge is proving that potential everywhere.

And that is what makes his NASCAR journey worth watching.
