Bubba Wallace Keeps Finding Ways To Lose, And NASCAR Fans Are Running Out Of Patience

Popular

At some point, bad luck stops being a complete explanation.

Bubba Wallace has been close to winning multiple times in 2026. He has led more than 300 laps without a victory, and his season has included heartbreaking finishes, costly penalties and opportunities that disappeared late.

Phoenix was the latest example.

Wallace led the field before a late caution changed the strategy. He lost track position during pit stops, then received a speeding penalty that sent him to the rear.

He finished 17th.

It was another painful afternoon for a driver who desperately needs a breakthrough.

The Speed Is There. The Results Aren’t.

Wallace’s supporters have a legitimate argument. The No. 23 team has shown race-winning speed, and not every disappointing finish is the driver’s fault.

But the scoreboard does not award points for almost winning.

The Phoenix penalty was particularly frustrating because Wallace had put himself in position to contend. He acknowledged the mistake afterward and took responsibility for it.

That accountability deserves credit. It does not erase the consequences.

At the highest level of NASCAR, the difference between a victory and a disappointing finish can come down to one decision. Wallace has experienced that reality repeatedly this season.

How Long Can The Excuses Last?

Wallace has proved he can win at the Cup level. His 2025 victory at Indianapolis ended a long drought and showed what the No. 23 team could accomplish.

But a new season brings new expectations.

23XI Racing has built a competitive organization, and Tyler Reddick has demonstrated the team’s ability to win consistently. Wallace should not be judged against an impossible standard, but he should be judged against the equipment available to him.

That is the uncomfortable part.

Wallace does not need to win every week. He does need to convert more of these opportunities into results.

Martinsville offers another chance to change the narrative. If he delivers, the critics will have less ammunition.

If another promising afternoon falls apart, the questions will only get louder.
