Smith Wins in Both the Truck and O’Reilly Series
Sammy Smith put together one of the most impressive weekends of his racing career at Talladega Superspeedway, sweeping the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and O’Reilly Auto Parts Series races with two dramatic victories.
Smith started the weekend with a major announcement, confirming he will compete full-time in the Truck Series with TRICON Garage in 2027. He then backed up that news by delivering on the track, winning Friday’s Love’s RV Stop 225 before returning Saturday to capture The Progress Group 250 with JR Motorsports.
The double victory made Smith the first non Cup Series driver since Greg Biffle in 2001 to win both a Truck Series race and an O’Reilly Series race at the same track during the same weekend.
Smith Shows His Talent at Talladega
Friday’s Truck Series victory was a significant moment for Smith, who captured his first career win in the series. He made the most of an overtime opportunity, edging Tyler Ankrum by just 0.091 seconds in a thrilling finish.
Smith had little time to celebrate, however, with another race waiting on Saturday.
Driving the No. 8 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, Smith qualified 11th for the O’Reilly Series event and spent much of the afternoon working through the field. Carson Kvapil controlled much of the race, leading 67 of the 94 laps, while Smith stayed within striking distance.
When the race reached its final lap, Smith made his move. With help from teammate Justin Allgaier and a push from championship contender Jesse Love, Smith surged past Kvapil and reached the finish line first by just 0.084 seconds.
The victory ended Smith’s 53 race winless streak in the O’Reilly Series and marked his fourth career win in the division.
A Weekend That Could Define His Future
Smith’s performance was especially meaningful as he prepares for a new chapter in his career. His move to TRICON Garage in 2027 gives him an opportunity to build on the momentum generated by his Talladega success.
Although Smith is no longer competing for the O’Reilly Series championship this season, his back-to-back victories demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure and capitalize on opportunities.
For JR Motorsports, the win also delivered another memorable moment in a successful season.
Smith arrived at Talladega with something to prove and left with two trophies. Winning twice in two different NASCAR national series over one weekend is an extraordinary accomplishment, and his performance could be a major confidence boost heading into the final races of the year.
After a weekend like this, Sammy Smith has given racing fans plenty of reasons to be excited about what comes next.
