If you’ve watched NASCAR on NBC lately, you’ve probably heard Leigh Diffey.
And if you’ve heard Leigh Diffey, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve also heard someone call him British.
There’s just one problem.
He’s not British.
Diffey is Australian.
The longtime motorsports broadcaster was born in Brisbane and has spent decades building one of the most impressive résumés in motorsports broadcasting. He became a major voice of IndyCar and Formula 1 before taking over as NBC’s lead NASCAR Cup Series play-by-play announcer in 2024.
So yes, that accent is real.
No, he did not grow up in London.
And honestly, NASCAR fans should probably appreciate what they’ve got with Diffey.
The guy brings an entirely different level of energy to a Cup broadcast. Whether it’s a last-lap finish, a massive wreck or simply a driver making an insane move three-wide, Diffey sounds like he actually wants you to know that something absolutely ridiculous just happened.
That’s kind of the point.
NASCAR.com has highlighted his versatility, energy and distinctive voice since he became NBC’s lead voice. His résumé includes NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, IMSA, Supercross and Olympic track and field.
So the next time somebody says, “That British NASCAR announcer is pretty good,” maybe help them out.
He’s Australian.
And he’s damn good at his job.
