Denny Hamlin Is Running Out Of Excuses, And Martinsville Could Decide His NASCAR Legacy

Popular

Denny Hamlin has spent years being one of NASCAR’s best drivers without winning the Cup Series championship. Now, his latest title opportunity is hanging by a thread.

Hamlin trails Kyle Larson by 73 points entering Martinsville. He needs an enormous weekend to keep his championship hopes alive.

For a driver with Hamlin’s experience and equipment, that is a brutal position.

The Window Is Closing

Hamlin has the talent to win races. He has the team, the experience and the short-track credentials to make a serious run at Martinsville.

But his 2026 postseason has been plagued by problems. Incidents, bad finishes and missed opportunities have left him chasing Larson instead of controlling the championship.

At some point, the excuses stop mattering.

Championships are not awarded for having a fast car or being competitive for most of the year. Drivers have to deliver when the stakes are highest.

Can Hamlin Finally Change The Narrative?

Martinsville gives Hamlin an opportunity to fight back. It is also a reminder of how difficult his championship mission has become.

If Larson outscores him by three or more points Sunday, Hamlin’s title hopes are over.

That leaves little room for another mistake.

Hamlin has accomplished plenty in NASCAR, and a championship would not erase the success he has already enjoyed. But the missing title remains the obvious question surrounding his career.

Is this finally the year he gets it done, or will NASCAR fans spend another offseason debating what might have been?

Sunday could provide the answer.
