NASCAR FANS WON’T BELIEVE HOW CLOSE KYLE LARSON IS TO STEALING THE SHOW AT MARTINSVILLE — THE CHAMPIONSHIP COULD BE OVER BEFORE HOMESTEAD!

Kyle Larson is closing in on another NASCAR Cup Series championship, and after what happened at Talladega, the rest of the field may be running out of time to stop him.

With Martinsville Speedway next on the schedule, Larson has put himself in an incredible position. His massive points advantage means he could effectively wrap up the 2026 championship before the series even reaches Homestead.

And the statistics behind his title chances make the situation even more unbelievable.

LARSON’S TALLADEGA PERFORMANCE CHANGED EVERYTHING

Larson’s victory at Talladega wasn’t just another win. It completely reshaped the championship picture.

His 71-point day allowed him to turn what had been a five-point advantage into a staggering 73-point lead. He collected 68 points toward his championship advantage at Talladega, the biggest single-race gain by any driver in that category this season.

Every other one of the 15 Chase drivers lost ground to Larson at Talladega, despite all of them gaining points on him in the previous race at Phoenix.

Tyler Reddick took the biggest hit of anyone, losing 70 points to Larson in one afternoon. That’s the largest points loss by a single driver in any race during the 2026 Chase.

The top eight at Talladega also featured plenty of championship contenders. Four of those drivers were Chase participants, including the top two finishers, Larson and William Byron.

Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin moved into second place in the standings. It marked the 25th time in his career that he had been ranked inside the top two.

Among the seven drivers still eligible for the championship, four are now more than an entire race’s worth of points behind Larson.

MARTINSVILLE COULD OFFICIALLY PUT THE CHAMPIONSHIP OUT OF REACH

The numbers heading into Martinsville are becoming increasingly difficult for the competition to overcome.

Larson needs to score just 59 points at Martinsville to secure the 2026 Cup Series championship, regardless of what the other drivers accomplish.

Any competitor who leaves Martinsville at least 77 points behind the leader will be eliminated from championship contention.

Larson currently has a 92.3% chance of winning the title, according to the championship projections. Even in scenarios where he doesn’t clinch at Martinsville, his average across the final two races is projected at 16.5 points per event.

That number is particularly important because Larson has had six different two-race stretches this season in which he averaged 16.5 points or fewer per race. In other words, even if he has a relatively quiet finish to the season, he remains in an excellent position.

His chances of actually clinching at Martinsville currently sit at 36.8%.

And here’s perhaps the most shocking number of all: even if Larson suffers a DNF at Martinsville, his championship probability would still be 81.4%.

DENNY HAMLIN’S PATH TO A CHAMPIONSHIP IS GETTING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT

Hamlin is currently the biggest threat to Larson, but the statistics suggest he has a steep mountain to climb.

If Hamlin wins both remaining races, his chances of capturing the championship rise to 60%.

However, to enter Homestead with control over his own championship destiny, Hamlin needs to leave Martinsville no more than 22 points behind Larson. The projections give him just a 3.2% chance of accomplishing that.

History also isn’t exactly on Hamlin’s side.

Since 2017, Hamlin has managed to outscore Larson by at least 74 points across a two-race stretch only five times when adjusted to the current points system.

Three of those five stretches included Martinsville. All five featured at least one short-track race, while four paired a short track with an intermediate track.

That means there is some historical evidence that Hamlin can make up significant ground in this type of schedule, but it certainly isn’t something that happens often.

CAN ANYONE ELSE ACTUALLY CATCH LARSON?

There are other championship contenders, but the historical numbers make their chances look even tougher.

Christopher Bell has managed to outscore Larson by 75 points across a two-race stretch just once in his career when adjusted to today’s points format. That happened during the COTA-to-Phoenix stretch in 2025.

For Chase Briscoe, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, and Tyler Reddick, there is no comparable precedent.

Under the current points system, none of those four drivers has ever outscored Larson by the margin they would need across any two-race stretch.

That’s an intimidating statistic for anyone hoping to keep the championship battle alive.

LARSON ALSO HAS AN INCREDIBLE HISTORY AT MARTINSVILLE

If Larson needed another reason to feel confident heading into Sunday, his recent results at the Virginia short track should provide one.

He has finished inside the top 10 in eight consecutive Martinsville races. That’s the longest active top-10 streak he has at any track on the Cup Series schedule.

With the championship potentially on the line, Larson is heading to a venue where he has consistently found a way to get the job done.

The bigger question is whether anyone can put together the kind of performance needed to keep the title fight alive.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Kyle Larson has put together an incredible season, and his Talladega performance may have delivered the knockout blow to the rest of the championship field.

He has a 73-point advantage, a 92.3% championship probability, and even a DNF at Martinsville may not be enough to derail his title hopes.

Denny Hamlin still has a mathematical path, and the other contenders haven’t been officially eliminated. But the numbers are making one thing very clear: this championship is Larson’s to lose.

If he scores 59 points at Martinsville, it’s over.
