After seven runner-up finishes and 33 races without a win, Christopher Bell finally broke through at Darlington, and the timing could not have been much better.
Bell entered the Southern 500 sixth in NASCAR’s Chase standings, 50 points behind championship leader Denny Hamlin. One win and 73 points later, he left Darlington second in the standings, just 12 points back.
That doesn’t suddenly make Bell the championship favorite, but Darlington may have turned a season defined by almost into a legitimate championship run. The next test comes at World Wide Technology Raceway, where Bell has three top-10 finishes in four Cup starts and an 8.5 average finish, second-best among drivers who have competed in all four Gateway races.
Further into the Chase are tracks where Bell has already proven he can win. He won at Phoenix in 2025 and finished second there earlier this season. He also owns Cup victories at the Charlotte Roval and Martinsville, both part of the final nine races this year. That experience matters in a Chase that rewards versatility. From Gateway and Phoenix to Bristol, the Roval, Talladega and Martinsville, there isn’t an obvious stretch of the remaining schedule where Bell enters without reason for confidence.
Darlington proved Bell can make up ground quickly. Now comes the harder part: doing it consistently.
One win doesn’t make him the championship favorite. But with nine races remaining and only 12 points separating him from Hamlin, Bell no longer needs to be discussed as someone who could enter the title fight because he’s already in it.
