The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs officially begin this weekend, and the 2026 Chase couldn’t have a tougher opening race.
The Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway will kick off the 10-race championship battle Sunday, putting all 16 playoff drivers through one of NASCAR’s most demanding tests. The 1.366-mile “Lady in Black” will host a 367-lap, 501-mile race where simply surviving can be just as important as winning.
With the championship on the line, several of the sport’s biggest names enter Darlington as favorites. Denny Hamlin begins the Chase as the top seed and one of the strongest Darlington drivers in the field. Hamlin has five career Cup wins at the track, the most among active drivers, along with 20 top-10 finishes.
But Hamlin isn’t the only driver with a legitimate chance to win.
Tyler Reddick enters the weekend with plenty of confidence after winning the spring race at Darlington. Reddick led 77 laps in that victory despite dealing with early brake and electrical issues, proving that his team knows how to manage the difficult South Carolina track.
Chase Briscoe is another major name to watch. The defending Southern 500 winner is looking for an incredible third consecutive victory in NASCAR’s Labor Day weekend classic. If Briscoe can repeat his success, he could immediately put himself in an excellent position to advance deeper into the Chase.
Kyle Larson, the defending Cup Series champion, also has plenty of Darlington experience. Larson won the Southern 500 in 2023 and has led more than 1,000 laps at the track during his career. William Byron is another Hendrick Motorsports driver who could contend, having finished eighth or better in six of his last eight Darlington starts.
The biggest danger, however, may be the track itself.
Darlington is notorious for tire wear, changing track conditions and drivers making contact with the wall. The race begins in the South Carolina heat and can finish under the lights, meaning teams will have to adjust their cars throughout the night.
That makes the Southern 500 less about having the fastest car and more about avoiding mistakes.
A driver can dominate the first 300 laps and still see his championship hopes disappear with one bad restart, worn tires or a trip into the wall.
That’s what makes Sunday’s race so important.
The favorites have the speed and experience to win, but at Darlington, nothing is guaranteed. Before anyone can start thinking about the championship, they first have to survive the Lady in Black.
