Jesse Love has one final opportunity to make history. The reigning NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion enters Saturday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a chance to defend his championship, but he will need a huge performance to get the job done.
Love currently sits second in the championship standings, 22 points behind Justin Allgaier. After holding the points lead heading into Martinsville, a difficult afternoon dropped the Richard Childress Racing driver behind Allgaier with only one race remaining.
Love Has Proven He Can Win When It Matters
Despite the setback at Martinsville, Love has been one of the strongest drivers throughout the postseason. The No. 2 Chevrolet team has captured two victories during the Chase, including impressive performances at Gateway and Phoenix.
Those wins have shown that Love has the speed and confidence necessary to compete for another championship. He also has experience at Homestead, where he has recorded two previous top-six finishes.
That experience could become extremely important Saturday. Homestead is a track where drivers must manage their tires, find speed on the high line and remain consistent throughout long green-flag runs.
Love will need his best performance of the season to put himself in position to challenge for the championship.
Allgaier Stands in His Way
Allgaier enters the finale with the advantage, but Love is not completely out of the picture. The defending champion controls his own opportunity to make a statement, although he will need a near-perfect day.
A victory combined with strong stage finishes and the fastest lap would give Love the maximum 76 points. That would be enough to secure the championship regardless of what Allgaier accomplishes.
The pressure will be enormous, but Love has already shown he can deliver under postseason pressure.
Can Love Make History?
Winning consecutive championships would be a major accomplishment for the young driver and Richard Childress Racing.
Love has the talent, equipment and experience to make it happen. Now, he needs everything to come together at Homestead.
If he can put together a dominant performance, Jesse Love could leave Florida as a two-time NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion.
