Kyle Larson needed a win.
Instead, he got one of the wildest victories of his career.
Larson survived a chaotic Gateway race Sunday to win the Enjoy Illinois 300.
He beat Alex Bowman in overtime for a Hendrick Motorsports 1-2 finish.
The victory ended Larson’s 51-race winless streak.
It also launched him into second place in the Chase standings.
Gateway Tested Everyone
World Wide Technology Raceway provided little room for error.
The 1.25-mile track punished mistakes all afternoon.
The race produced 18 cautions and 87 caution laps.
Eleven different lead changes added to the chaos.
Brake failures also became a major storyline.
Ryan Blaney’s race ended with brake trouble.
Chase Elliott also dealt with a late brake issue.
Meanwhile, several playoff contenders struggled to stay clean.
Larson somehow kept his No. 5 Chevrolet in contention.
Larson Delivered When It Mattered
Larson started from the front row alongside Logano.
He finished third in the opening stage.
Then he took control in Stage 2.
Larson led 80 laps throughout the race.
More importantly, he stayed patient when the field repeatedly bunched together.
That patience paid off.
The race eventually reached overtime.
Larson survived the first restart.
He survived another.
Then he beat Bowman to the checkered flag.
The Win Changes Everything
Larson’s season suddenly looks much different.
The win ended one of the longest droughts of his career.
It also gave him a massive playoff boost.
Larson entered Gateway outside the top two.
He left sitting second behind Hamlin.
That is exactly where Hendrick Motorsports wants him.
The Chase is only two races old.
There is still plenty of racing left.
However, Larson has something he did not have entering Gateway.
Momentum.
The drought is over.
The championship fight just got much more dangerous.
And Kyle Larson is right in the middle of it.
