Formula 1 is heading somewhere it has never raced before.
And this one is going to look wild.
The Spanish Grand Prix arrives in Madrid this weekend for the debut of the brand-new Madring circuit. The 5.4-kilometer track combines purpose-built sections with urban roads around the IFEMA exhibition center and Valdebebas.
But everyone is talking about one corner.
La Monumental.
Turn 12 is a roughly 550-meter banked monster with up to 24% banking. Drivers will spend about six seconds navigating the sweeping corner at speed.
That is not exactly your typical Formula 1 corner.
The track also features 22 turns, elevation changes and sections designed to punish mistakes. Cars could reach roughly 340 kph on the circuit’s fastest sections.
And here is the crazy part.
Almost nobody knows exactly what this race is going to look like.
Drivers have spent most of their preparation in simulators. Now they have to figure out the real thing with a championship fight happening around them.
