Major Wreck Ends Both Drivers’ Days Early

Tony Stewart and Cleetus McFarland saw their NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races end early Friday after being caught in a major multi truck crash at Talladega Superspeedway. The incident occurred on Lap 17 of the Love’s RV Stop 225, bringing Stage 1 to an early end and forcing NASCAR to red-flag the race for cleanup.

Stewart, a three time NASCAR Cup Series champion, was making his second Truck Series start of the season. McFarland, the popular YouTube personality turned racer, was making his third career start in the series. Both drivers suffered heavy damage and were unable to continue.

How the Crash Started

The wreck began when Stewart Friesen’s No. 52 Toyota appeared to lose speed in Turns 1 and 2. Contact from another truck sent Friesen into Kris Wright, whose truck moved across the track and struck the outside wall.

Stewart was caught in the middle of the incident with little room to escape. His No. 25 truck sustained heavy damage after making contact and hitting the wall.

McFarland was running behind the main accident and attempted to slow down and move low to avoid the wreck. However, contact from another truck sent his No. 4 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet sideways and into the inside wall.

The crash also collected Corey LaJoie, Cole Butcher, Daniel Hemric and Andrés Pérez, among others.

Frustration for Stewart and McFarland

Stewart had made progress during the opening laps after starting 29th, climbing 11 positions before the crash ended his afternoon. He later said the impact knocked the wind out of him and was evaluated at the infield care center before being released.

For Stewart, the incident was another frustrating setback in his return to NASCAR competition after nearly a decade away from driving in the series.

McFarland was equally disappointed. He had been trying to stay clear of trouble and gain experience in the draft, but his truck was heavily damaged despite his efforts to avoid the initial pileup. He also reported that he was fine after the incident.

Talladega Delivers More Early Drama

The crash dramatically changed the race, ending Stage 1 before its scheduled conclusion. Giovanni Ruggiero was credited with the stage victory, followed by Kaden Honeycutt and Austin Green.

For Stewart and McFarland, however, the focus shifted from racing to regrouping after an early exit. Talladega’s tight drafting packs can leave drivers with little time to react when a truck slows unexpectedly, and Friday’s crash showed just how quickly a promising run can end.

Both drivers will take away a disappointing result from Talladega, while the remaining field continues battling for valuable points in the Truck Series postseason.
