Smith Delivers When It Matters Most
Sammy Smith captured his first NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victory of the 2026 season on Saturday, winning the Progress Group 250 at Talladega Superspeedway with a dramatic last lap pass. Driving the No. 8 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, Smith edged teammate Carson Kvapil by just 0.084 seconds in a thrilling finish.
The victory marked Smith’s fourth career win in the series and snapped a 53 race winless streak. It also completed an incredible weekend at Talladega, as Smith won Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race before returning to victory lane in the O’Reilly Series on Saturday.
JR Motorsports Controls the Race
JR Motorsports showed impressive speed throughout the afternoon, controlling much of the action and collecting both stage victories. Kvapil won Stage 1, while Justin Allgaier captured Stage 2 as the organization continued to position multiple cars near the front.
Kvapil appeared to be in excellent position to secure the victory after leading late in the race. However, Smith remained within striking distance as the field approached the closing laps.
With the checkered flag approaching, Smith received a crucial push from Allgaier down the backstretch. That momentum allowed the No. 8 Chevrolet to surge forward and get alongside Kvapil before completing the pass.
Smith held on through the final stretch, crossing the finish line just ahead of his teammate. The margin of victory highlighted just how close the finish was, with the top contenders battling for every inch at one of NASCAR’s most unpredictable tracks.
Strong Results for the Championship Contenders
Kvapil finished second, giving JR Motorsports a one-two finish at Talladega. Jesse Love finished third for Richard Childress Racing, followed by Allgaier in fourth and Sheldon Creed in fifth.
Corey Day, Blaine Perkins, Dean Thompson, Brandon Jones and Anthony Alfredo rounded out the top 10.
The result also carried important championship implications. Love remained atop the standings, but his advantage over Allgaier narrowed to 19 points with only two races remaining in the 2026 season. Day sat 29 points behind Love, keeping the championship battle alive heading into the final stretch.
Smith Builds Momentum
For Smith, the victory provides a major boost after a difficult season without a win. Winning both the Truck Series and O’Reilly Series races at Talladega makes the weekend especially memorable.
Smith and JR Motorsports will now turn their attention to Martinsville Speedway, where the series returns next weekend. With momentum on his side, Smith will look to carry his Talladega success into the season’s final races.
