NASCAR O’Reilly Series Preview: Championship Race Heats Up at Phoenix

Popular

The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series heads to Phoenix Raceway on Saturday night for the Timberland PRO 200, with championship contenders preparing for another important race in the 2026 Chase.

The 200 mile event marks the sixth race of the nine-race postseason, leaving drivers with little room for mistakes as the championship battle intensifies. Phoenix’s one mile oval is known for its challenging corners, changing racing lines and difficult restarts, making track position and tire management critical throughout the race.

The race is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on The CW.

Sheldon Creed Looks to Protect His Lead

Sheldon Creed enters the Phoenix race leading the Chase standings, with Corey Day sitting just seven points behind him after winning last weekend’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Creed has consistently been among the strongest competitors throughout the season, but the narrow points gap means another strong result from Day could change the standings significantly.

Day arrives with momentum after earning the victory at Charlotte. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has demonstrated impressive speed during the postseason and now has another opportunity to challenge for the championship lead.

With four Chase races remaining after Phoenix, every position could make a difference in determining which drivers remain in contention.

Carson Kvapil and Jesse Love Look for Opportunities

Carson Kvapil is another driver worth watching this weekend. The JR Motorsports driver finished third at Phoenix earlier this season after leading 22 laps, demonstrating that he has the speed to compete near the front at the Arizona track.

Kvapil enters the race fifth in the Chase standings, 40 points behind the leader. A strong performance could help him close that gap and strengthen his championship hopes.

Jesse Love also enters the weekend with a strong Phoenix résumé. Love won the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship at Phoenix in 2025 and returns as the defending winner of the fall event.

His experience at the track could prove valuable as teams work to find the right balance for Saturday night’s race.

Phoenix Could Produce Another Dramatic Finish

Phoenix Raceway presents a unique challenge for drivers because its relatively short layout can produce intense battles throughout the field. Restarts often create opportunities for drivers to gain several positions, while tire wear can become increasingly important as a run develops.

Pit strategy will also play a major role. Teams must decide when to make adjustments, how long to stay on track and whether to prioritize track position or fresh tires during the closing stages.

With 200 laps scheduled, there will be plenty of opportunities for the race to change direction.

Championship Pressure Continues

Saturday’s race represents another major checkpoint in the Chase. Creed will attempt to maintain his championship advantage, while Day, Kvapil and the rest of the contenders look to gain valuable ground.

The Timberland PRO 200 offers another opportunity for rising stars and experienced competitors to make their mark. With the championship battle tightening and the postseason moving closer to its conclusion, Phoenix could play a significant role in determining who remains in contention for the 2026 title.
