Layne Riggs Closes Championship Gap as Truck Series Title Battle Intensifies

Popular

Just two races ago, Layne Riggs was watching his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship advantage slip away. Now, he’s within 17 points of championship leader Kaden Honeycutt.

Riggs entered the Chase as the top seed with six victories, but his championship run quickly hit trouble. A loose wheel contributed to a 32nd-place finish at Bristol, and a late mistake while chasing Honeycutt at Kansas dropped him to 19th, leaving him 37 points behind in the standings.

Friday night’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway changed that.

Honeycutt led 85 of 134 laps and appeared positioned to extend his championship lead. But with seven laps remaining, he slid into the outside wall while trying to defend against Riggs, allowing the No. 34 Ford to take the lead.

Riggs went on to claim his seventh victory of the season, while Honeycutt finished third, cutting the championship gap by 20 points.

The reversal is particularly interesting because both drivers have now made costly mistakes while battling for victories. Riggs acknowledged pushing too hard at Kansas, while Honeycutt admitted he became too focused on defending against Riggs at Charlotte rather than running his own race.

Their battle has also created separation in the standings. Third-place Chandler Smith trails Honeycutt by 77 points, leaving Riggs as his closest challenger with four races remaining.

With Phoenix next on the schedule, the championship is far from decided. NASCAR’s Chase format rewards cumulative points rather than eliminating drivers, meaning consistency throughout the final races will be just as important as outright speed.

For Riggs and Honeycutt, the last two races have shown how quickly momentum can shift, and how one mistake can change the championship picture.
