Reigning world champion Lando Norris has committed his future to McLaren until at least 2030. This move comes even though he told reporters the current machine is “horrible to drive” and lacks confidence in slow corners. Most people would walk away from a bad ride. Norris chose to stay and build the house himself.
During the team’s annual factory open day for family and friends, RaceFans reported the announcement happened. The deal locks up the British star for the next six seasons, a rare long-term bet in a sport where drivers jump ship for a few extra seconds. “McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030,” said Norris. Since 2019, he debuted with the team and has never driven for another. That loyalty is hard to find in any industry today.
Norris already holds the record for the longest career spent entirely at one team in Formula 1 history. He has started 163 grands prix for the squad and won 13 of them. His first win came in 2024, and he secured the world championship title last year. For that victorious 2025 season, the team confirmed he will also get one of the MCL39 chassis he drove. It is a reward for a decade of work.
Why Stick With a Broken Machine?
You might think a champion would leave a car that struggles in low-speed turns. Norris admits the vehicle is tricky to handle this year. “It’s tough to say, but I do think it’s a trickier car to drive this year in some ways,” said Norris. He points out that the gaps between teammates are often bigger now than they were last year. This suggests the car is harder to master for everyone, not just him.
Despite the pain, Norris believes he is getting better at managing the mess. “I do believe I’m able to understand situations better, to understand the car in a better way,” he explained. He says his work off the track is just as important as his driving on it. The team put in the work overnight to fix issues before the race in the Netherlands. This effort transformed their race and gave him the chance to win. That kind of grit is what wins titles.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown called the deal a fantastic example of identifying and supporting world-class talent. Brown said Norris helped drive the team into a new era of success. They went from the back of the grid to winning double consecutive constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025. The team also won their first drivers’ championship in 17 years. Brown noted that the team remains fully focused on competing for more wins.
A Dynasty in the Making
This contract sends a clear message to rivals that McLaren is not going anywhere. The driver market could get very spicy in 2028, so locking Norris down early sets a warning signal. Formula 1 Official noted that the team knows what they have and what he is worth. They do not want to let him go. The deal gives certainty to shareholders and wards off admirers from other teams.
Trust and belief formed the foundation of this relationship back in 2017. A decade later, those factors remain the cornerstones. Team mate Oscar Piastri is also signed up until the end of 2028, and both sides seem happy. McLaren is well set for the future as they battle to create a papaya-coloured dynasty. Norris believes they want more than just what they have achieved so far. “We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we’re capable of achieving it.”
The team believes Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella are “incredible” leaders. They feel the people working with Norris are the best in the business. Everyone is moving in the right direction to bring success. So there really was no reason to change. Norris sees the path forward and is ready to walk it with his home team.
The next scheduled event is the announcement of the 2027 line-up for Alpine, which will confirm Colapinto remains alongside Gasly. That news comes as F1 team bosses discuss refuelling and whether it adds to the spectacle. While others debate the rules, Norris is already planning his next six years of racing. He knows what he needs from the car and what tracks will be tough. He does not want to struggle more. So he is doing his part to make sure the team does not relax.
