One Flat Tire Wiped Out a Championship

Tommy Milner and Nicky Catsburg arrived at Road Atlanta leading the GTD PRO Driver Championship. They looked set to convert that lead into a class title on Saturday. The plan fell apart when a late-race flat left-rear tire ended their challenge. This single mechanical failure turned a potential victory lap into a heartbreaking eighth-place finish for the No. 3 car. Antonio Garcia, Alexander Sims, and Marvin Kirchhöfer had led the race twice for 61 laps before disaster struck.

The No. 4 Corvette of Milner and Catsburg faced even worse luck. Another GTD PRO contender forced them off the track and into a gravel trap. That driver received a penalty, but the damage to the championship chase was done. The No. 4 car finished 12th after multiple rounds of late-race contact. Lightning caused a red-flag stoppage during the chaotic 10-hour race that saw a record 17 full-course yellows. Per Sportscar365, the conditions were anything but smooth for anyone.

Chaos Favors the Bold and Punishes the Slow

This race proves that in endurance racing, you can do everything right and still lose. The field saw 17 full-course yellow flags and a red flag for lightning. That is a recipe for mistakes. The DragonSpeed Corvette of Giacomo Altoé, Casper Stevenson, and Sebastien Bourdais placed sixth. It was their first race in GTD PRO, yet they led three times in the second half. They showed that new teams can survive the madness if they stay out of the way.

The Z06 GT3 was discussed by Eric Warren, General Motors Vice President of Global Motorsports Competition.R car has come into its own. He noted the championship came down to the wire. Warren called the car incredible and said he could not be more proud. That pride is hard earned when the competition is this fierce. The GTD PRO Manufacturer title went to Corvette Racing, but the driver title slipped away due to bad breaks. It is a harsh lesson in motorsports. You build your car, you train your drivers, and then you pray the tires hold up.

Orey Fidani of 13 Autosport took a different path. He weathered the chaos to secure his third straight Bob Akin Award. An automatic invitation to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027 comes with this win. Fidani, Matt Bell, and Lars Kern led eight laps late in the GTD class. Their consistency in a field full of errors paid off big time. For the first time this season, DXDT Racing also ascended the GTD podium. Charlie Eastwood, Mason Filippi, and Salih Yoluc placed third after starting four laps down. They proved that a fast recovery is just as valuable as a fast start.

Next Stop Is Daytona and the Real Test

The team will not have long to mourn the loss at Road Atlanta. The 2027 Rolex 24 At Daytona will see Chevrolet and Corvette Racing return to IMSA competition. The race is scheduled for January 30-31. That is the next big test for the Z06 GT3.R. Mark Stielow, Director of GM Motorsports Competition Programs, offered congratulations to Orey Fidani and 13 Autosport. He also secured Orey’s third consecutive Bob Akin Award. The focus now shifts to the season opener in Florida.
