IndyCar fans in Texas could have reason to get excited about the future, as questions continue surrounding whether the series could return to Texas Motor Speedway in 2027. The Fort Worth oval was once a regular stop on the IndyCar calendar, but the series has not raced there since 2023. While a return to the track would be a major development, there has been no official confirmation of a 2027 race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Texas remains an important market for IndyCar, and the series has continued working to strengthen its presence in the state. The biggest example is the Grand Prix of Arlington, which debuted in 2026 and is scheduled to return in March 2027.
Texas Motor Speedway’s IndyCar History
Texas Motor Speedway was a staple of IndyCar racing for more than two decades. The series competed at the 1.5-mile oval every year from 1997 through 2023, producing numerous memorable finishes and high-speed battles.
The track became known for its intense racing, with drivers running close together at tremendous speeds while navigating the challenging banking. However, scheduling difficulties and a failure to reach an agreement contributed to the race disappearing from the calendar after 2023.
A return would give IndyCar another major oval event and restore a longstanding venue to the schedule. It would also provide Texas fans with a different experience from the street racing now featured in Arlington.
Arlington Keeps IndyCar in Texas
Although Texas Motor Speedway has been absent, IndyCar has found another way to maintain its presence in North Texas.
The Java House Grand Prix of Arlington debuted in 2026 on a temporary street circuit surrounding AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field. The inaugural event drew significant attention, and organizers have already confirmed its return for March 19-21, 2027.
The Arlington race offers a different style of competition, with tight corners, temporary barriers and a street-circuit layout. A return to Texas Motor Speedway would complement that event rather than replace it, giving fans two very different racing experiences.
Will Texas Motor Speedway Return in 2027?
For now, fans should treat a potential Texas Motor Speedway return as speculation rather than a confirmed addition. IndyCar has announced the first portion of its 2027 schedule, but the remaining dates have yet to be fully revealed.
A return would make sense for fans who miss the high-speed oval racing that defined the track’s relationship with the series. However, any deal would depend on scheduling, financial considerations and an agreement between IndyCar and the speedway.
Until an official announcement arrives, Arlington remains the confirmed Texas stop for 2027. Whether Texas Motor Speedway can make its way back onto the calendar is a storyline IndyCar fans will be watching closely.
