Hendrick Motorsports Star Claims First Talladega Victory

Kyle Larson delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday, winning the YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway after a chaotic overtime finish. The Hendrick Motorsports driver held off teammate William Byron and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to claim his first career Cup Series victory at Talladega.

Larson’s win was his third of the 2026 season and 35th of his Cup Series career. It also gave him a major boost in the championship battle with only two races remaining in the Chase.

The victory was especially important after Larson finished 34th at Phoenix Raceway last weekend. Instead of allowing that disappointing result to derail his momentum, Larson responded with a clutch performance at one of NASCAR’s most unpredictable tracks.

Larson Survives Talladega Chaos

The race featured multiple major accidents that dramatically changed the championship picture. A large crash during the second stage collected several Chase contenders, including Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick, who were unable to continue.

Larson managed to avoid the worst of the wreckage and remained in contention throughout the afternoon. He showed strong speed during the opening stages, even narrowly missing out on the Stage 2 victory to Joey Logano.

The closing laps brought even more drama. After a late crash involving Logano forced NASCAR to red flag the race, the field prepared for an overtime restart that would determine the winner.

Larson initially took control, but Austin Hill pushed him out of the lead and sent him tumbling back through the pack. With the white flag waving, Larson found himself outside the top 10 and seemingly out of contention.

However, he refused to give up.

With help from Ross Chastain, Larson charged through the field during the final lap. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. appeared poised to steal the victory, but Larson made one final move to surge past him and Byron at the finish line.

Byron finished second, just 0.041 seconds behind his teammate, while Stenhouse settled for third.

Championship Battle Takes Another Turn

Larson’s victory strengthened his position at the top of the Chase standings. He now holds a 73 point advantage over Denny Hamlin with two races remaining.

The next stop is Martinsville Speedway on November 1, where Larson will have another opportunity to move closer to the championship.

After overcoming the crashes, shifting positions and a frantic final lap at Talladega, Larson leaves Alabama with more than a trophy. He leaves with valuable momentum as he pursues another NASCAR Cup Series championship.
