Mercedes Star Moves Closer to Historic Formula 1 Championship

Kimi Antonelli continued his incredible 2026 Formula 1 season Sunday, winning the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The Mercedes driver delivered a dominant performance to claim his ninth victory of the season and move one step closer to securing his first world championship.

Antonelli crossed the finish line more than 13 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completed the podium in third place. The victory further established the 20-year-old Italian as the driver to beat as the season approaches its conclusion.

Starting from pole position, Antonelli made an excellent opening lap and quickly established control of the race. His strong start allowed him to build an early advantage while Verstappen and Leclerc battled behind him.

Antonelli Makes the Right Strategy Work

While several competitors faced challenges managing their tires, Antonelli and Mercedes executed an effective one stop strategy that helped him maintain his advantage throughout the race.

Antonelli delivered an impressive stint on medium tires before switching to the hard compound. He managed his tires effectively and maintained a strong pace, allowing him to control the race even as the pressure increased behind him.

Leclerc eventually moved ahead of Verstappen to secure second place, but neither driver could seriously threaten Antonelli’s lead. The Mercedes star remained composed through the closing laps and brought home another major victory.

Lewis Hamilton finished fourth for Ferrari, while McLaren’s Lando Norris settled for fifth. Oscar Piastri finished seventh, and Mercedes teammate George Russell crossed the line in eighth after receiving a five second penalty.

Championship Dreams Getting Closer

Although Antonelli won the race, he did not clinch the championship in Austin. Russell’s eighth place finish and Hamilton’s fourth place result kept the title mathematically undecided.

However, Antonelli now holds a commanding championship advantage and needs only a ninth place finish at next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix to guarantee the title, regardless of his rivals’ results.

If he secures the championship, Antonelli would become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record.

With five races remaining, Antonelli has put himself in an excellent position to complete a remarkable season. His latest victory demonstrates his consistency, composure and ability to deliver under pressure.

The young Italian will now head to Mexico with history within reach. After another commanding performance in Austin, Antonelli is closer than ever to becoming Formula 1’s next world champion.
