Zane Smith Fined $50,000 by NASCAR After Post Race Clash With Carson Hocevar

Zane Smith has been hit with a $50,000 fine by NASCAR after intentionally making contact with Carson Hocevar following Sunday’s Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway. The penalty, announced Tuesday, October 20, comes after another heated chapter in the ongoing rivalry between the two drivers.

What Happened at Phoenix?

The incident began during the closing laps of the Freeway Insurance 500. With approximately 15 laps remaining, Hocevar received contact from Ross Chastain entering Turn 3. That sent Hocevar up the track and into Smith’s No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford, also collecting Josh Berry in the incident.

Smith lost valuable track position and ultimately finished 15th, while Hocevar crossed the finish line in 12th.

However, the tension did not end when the checkered flag waved. During the cool-down lap, Smith accelerated toward Hocevar’s No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet and slammed into its rear bumper before the drivers headed toward pit road.

The move quickly attracted NASCAR’s attention, with officials determining that Smith’s actions crossed the line from aggressive racing into a safety violation.

NASCAR Sends a Message

NASCAR cited Sections 4.4a and 10.5.2.5a of its rule book when issuing the $50,000 fine. The latter addresses violations that compromise event or participant safety.

The decision also comes after Smith and Hocevar were previously called in to speak with NASCAR officials following an earlier confrontation at Chicagoland Speedway in July. The two drivers have a history of disagreements, and their rivalry has continued to produce tension throughout the season.

NASCAR officials explained that the previous discussion played a role in the latest penalty. The sanctioning body wants drivers to compete aggressively, but officials made it clear that contact after the race can become a serious safety concern.

Smith was not issued a points penalty, meaning the punishment is financial rather than a direct change to his championship position. He also has the opportunity to appeal the fine.

What Happens Next?

The situation adds another storyline heading into the next Cup Series weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. Hocevar enters the event looking to remain competitive in the championship battle, while Smith will attempt to put the controversy behind him.

With tensions between the two drivers still unresolved, their next on-track encounter will be worth watching. NASCAR has delivered its message with a substantial fine, and any further incidents could bring additional scrutiny to this increasingly heated rivalry.
