John Hunter Nemechek and Legacy Motor Club are set to go their separate ways following the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Legacy Motor Club announced Wednesday that Nemechek will not return to the organization in 2027. The 29-year-old has driven the No. 42 Toyota for the team since returning to the Cup Series in 2024.
The announcement brings an end to Nemechek’s three-season run with Legacy Motor Club. Although the organization showed signs of progress during his time with the team, the results have been inconsistent, particularly during the 2026 season.
Nemechek enjoyed his strongest Cup Series season statistically in 2025. He recorded two top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes while finishing 25th in the championship standings. His 20.3 average finish was also the best of his Cup career at the time.
However, the 2026 season has been more difficult. Nemechek currently sits 27th in the championship standings and has recorded just one top-five and two top-10 finishes. His best result of the season came at Pocono Raceway, where he finished fourth in June.
Despite the team’s decision, Nemechek made it clear that he remains motivated about his future in NASCAR. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude toward Legacy Motor Club, Toyota and the team’s sponsors while saying he believes his best days are still ahead.
For now, Nemechek’s focus will be on finishing the 2026 season strong. With 10 races remaining, he will have an opportunity to put together some strong results and potentially attract interest from another Cup Series organization.
The question now becomes who will take over the No. 42 Toyota in 2027.
Josh Berry has emerged as a leading candidate for the seat, although Legacy Motor Club has not officially announced Nemechek’s replacement. Berry is currently driving the No. 21 Ford for Wood Brothers Racing, but that organization is expected to replace him with Jesse Love next season.
Nemechek’s future remains uncertain, but his résumé outside the Cup Series could help him find another opportunity. He has 11 wins in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and 13 victories in the Craftsman Truck Series, including a strong championship-contending run during his time in the lower divisions.
For Legacy Motor Club, the organization will now begin preparing for a new driver in the No. 42.
For Nemechek, the final 10 races of 2026 could be the beginning of his next chapter.
